2009 lecture series
March 25th 7pm. Here at the Nature Education and Resource Centre
Title: "Parasites, parentage and double-brooding: The ecology of mountain
bluebirds in the Cariboo Region of BC"
Description: Erin O'Brien, a doctoral candidate in the Natural Resources and
Environmental Studies program at the University of Northern B.C. in Prince
George, will be discussing some of the results of her research with Dr.
Russell Dawson on mountain bluebirds in the Cariboo, south of Williams Lake.
From 2006-2008 they have used an experimental approach to address questions
related to the effects of nest-dwelling parasites on nestling birds, as well
as factors that affect patterns of parentage within nests, and the
probability of female bluebirds producing a second brood in the same
breeding season. This presentation will cover everything from the scandalous
mating behaviour of individual bluebirds in the Cariboo to the implications
of climate change for songbird populations in northern latitudes.
